In July, three neighbours looked after a small shared garden behind their building. Mina came on Mondays, Joël on Wednesdays and Farah on Fridays. They had a large watering can and enough time, but their arrangement remained on an old sheet without dates.
One Friday, nobody came. Farah thought Joël was covering for her, while Joël believed she had only mentioned another day. The next day, the soil was dry and several plants looked weak. Mina watered the garden, then called the other two.
Joël suggested buying a second watering can. However, Farah pointed out that the existing one worked very well. The real problem came from the cover arrangement: they had discussed it briefly without confirming it. A new tool did not say who was supposed to come.
The three neighbours therefore prepared a rota with full dates. They wrote a name beside each turn. To change days, the absent person had to ask for cover and wait for a clear response. They also added a box to tick after watering.
The following week, Farah asked Mina to come instead of her on Friday 24 July. Mina accepted by message, then Mina’s name replaced Farah’s on the sheet. This time, the turn was covered. Thanks to this change, the neighbours knew who was coming and which days still needed planning. The plants regained vigour, and the group kept this simple system.
