Myth or fact
Does a French average rise mean most people gained?
Test whether a higher French average means most people gained. Compare a five-person dataset before and after one large increase.

In short
No: one large increase can raise the mean while most values stay unchanged. Check individual changes or the distribution before saying la majorité a bénéficié d’une hausse. The mean alone cannot establish that claim.

The same five people are observed in two periods. Four amounts remain at €1,000. The fifth rises from €1,000 to €6,000. The group’s mean doubles, but only one person receives more. Use this complete small dataset for the statements below.
| Person | Before | After |
|---|---|---|
| A | 1,000 | 1,000 |
| B | 1,000 | 1,000 |
| C | 1,000 | 1,000 |
| D | 1,000 | 1,000 |
| E | 1,000 | 6,000 |
Vrai ou faux ? Decide before you see the verdict.
Le revenu moyen passe de 1 000 à 2 000 euros.
VraiThe total rises from €5,000 to €10,000. Dividing each total by five gives the stated means.
La majorité des personnes a reçu une hausse.
FauxOnly E’s amount changes. Four of the five people receive exactly the same amount as before.
Le revenu médian reste de 1 000 euros.
VraiThe middle value in the sorted five-person series is €1,000 in both periods.
Une personne sur cinq reçoit davantage.
VraiE alone rises from €1,000 to €6,000, so one of the five people gains.
La hausse moyenne décrit exactement la hausse de chacun.
FauxThe mean rises by €1,000, but individual changes are zero for four people and €5,000 for E.
Les données individuelles permettent ici de compter les gagnants.
VraiThe table follows the same named people across periods, so their individual changes can be counted.
A faithful sentence keeps both levels
La moyenne double, mais quatre personnes sur cinq ne connaissent aucune hausse ; le gain se concentre sur une personne.
The mean doubles, but four people out of five see no increase; the gain is concentrated on one person.
This is more informative than either “everyone is richer” or “nothing improved”. The total rises and one person gains. Those facts do not establish broad benefit. A median gives another distribution summary, while individual change records directly answer how many gained.
In a larger report, you may have only a mean, with no person-level data. Then state what remains unknown: la répartition de cette hausse n’est pas précisée. Do not import the pattern from this example into another dataset; it shows a possibility, not a rule that every rising mean is driven by one person.
