Voici Léa et son frère. Voici Hugo et sa sœur.

Here are Léa and her brother. Here are Hugo and his sister.

The owner changes, but the family noun still decides the possessive.

Son frère can mean “his brother” or “her brother”; the situation tells you whose brother he is. Before a feminine noun beginning with a vowel, use mon, ton or son: mon amie. The noun stays feminine. For several owners, the examples in the deck also use notre bébé, leur fille and leurs petits-enfants.

Which French family words have two meanings?

Mes parents means “my parents”. For relatives more broadly, use ma famille. Ma femme means “my wife”, while une femme can mean “a woman”. Ma fille means “my daughter”; une fille can mean “a girl”. Beau-père and belle-mère can name either an in-law or a step-parent. Add a short explanation when the relationship matters.

Mon beau-père, c’est le mari de ma mère.

My stepfather is my mother’s husband.
