Tonight Hugo has his first swimming lesson. He packs his bag. First, he takes his blue swimsuit and a big towel.
At the pool, a swimming cap is compulsory. Hugo puts it in the bag with his goggles, because the chlorine stings his eyes.
For the shower, he takes some shower gel. To walk around the pool, he wears his flip-flops.
Finally, he takes a padlock for the locker and a one-euro coin. He's ready!
What are the rules at a French swimming pool?
Many French public pools require a swimming cap and close-fitting trunks: loose swim shorts (le short de bain) are often not allowed for hygiene reasons. A quick shower before swimming is compulsory, and you walk barefoot or in flip-flops past le pédiluve, a shallow footbath.
