French anecdote vocabulary: 24 words for a small surprise

Learn twenty-four French anecdote words and chunks for sequence, reactions and small concrete details. Practise noticing a surprise and describing what happens next.

In short

Use one connector for the interruption, an action for the reaction and finalement for the result: Tout à coup, le téléphone a sonné. J’ai sursauté. Finalement, j’ai retrouvé mon calme. The cards supply twenty-four useful chunks and concrete details for a short anecdote.

Yellow the idea to rememberBlue French to learn

A small surprise needs a clear sequence more than a dramatic plot. You can tell how an envelope appeared, a notebook fell or a familiar person arrived unexpectedly. Choose a few precise words and connect the actions, rather than using every connector in the same sentence.

Se rendre compte introduces the discovery

Se rendre compte que is followed by a clause: Il s’est rendu compte que le carnet était dans son sac. The discovery is in the completed past, while était describes the notebook’s location in that discovered situation. The chunk helps you tell what someone understood at that point in the story.
