What does a French café server say?
| French | English |
|---|---|
| Je vous mets ça où ? | Where shall I put this? |
| Sur le comptoir ou en terrasse ? | At the counter or outside? |
| Le sucre est là, à côté. | The sugar is there, next to it. |
| Vous payez maintenant ? | Are you paying now? |
| Servez-vous. | Help yourself. |
In a traditional café, you often pay when the drink arrives or at the end, at the counter. The little saucer left with your drink sometimes holds the receipt; leaving a few coins on it is a small tip (un pourboire), which is appreciated but not required, as service is included.
