French childhood diary timeline: a normal week and one unusual day

Compare a French childhood routine with one dated school week. Follow five weekdays and identify the museum trip that replaces the usual Thursday class.

In short

Use the routine paragraph for what usually happened, then the dated diary for what happened that week. Sami normally went to class on Thursdays. On Thursday 6 May, he took a train with his class to a museum instead. The dates establish the order; the tense alone does not identify the weekday.

This practice extract covers 3–7 May 2010. It gives both Sami’s usual pattern and a record of the particular week. Read the two sections together to find the exception without changing the other days.

The repeated pattern and the dated exception are supplied separately.

A routine sets up an expectation

Allait en classe and prenait un cours describe the usual week. They explain why Thursday would normally involve class in the usual room. The diary then names a different event for that specific Thursday. Wednesday’s music lesson follows the routine, so it is not the exception.

He usually went to class on Thursdays; that week, he visited a museum.

The calendar labels keep the sequence explicit

The train trip follows Wednesday’s music lesson and precedes Friday’s return to class. The timeline uses the dated notes to make that order visible. A completed-past form such as a pris can report a dated event, but it does not by itself tell you where that event sits among the weekdays.

Friday’s return to class. Vendredi 7 mai is listed after the Thursday outing and says retour en classe.

To summarise a routine with one exception, write the usual action first and the dated change second. That gives the listener a reason to notice the unusual day while preserving the rest of the weekly pattern.
