French collective promises: nous allons, nous devons and nous pouvons

Match French collective-plan statements to exact meanings: planned action, an obligation in a stated charter and a possibility that remains undecided.

In short

Nous allons announces a planned action, nous devons states an obligation, and nous pouvons expresses a possibility or ability in context. None of these forms alone proves the action has already happened. Read the surrounding charter to see what is planned, required or merely possible.

The class charter below separates agreed plans, rules within its project and options still open for discussion. The modal verbs help identify each statement’s force. The context also matters: devons can express other meanings elsewhere, but the charter explicitly frames its devons sentences as rules.

A plan has not necessarily happened yet

Nous allons préparer is near-future wording for an announced plan. It differs from nous avons préparé, which reports a completed preparation. Monday’s planned poster is therefore not evidence that a finished poster is already available. Keep the auxiliary aller separate from avoir when reading quickly.

Nous allons préparer l’affiche lundi ; elle n’est pas encore prête.

We are going to prepare the poster on Monday; it is not ready yet.

An obligation and an option are not the same commitment

The règles heading makes the two devons sentences requirements within this exercise. The possibilités à discuter heading leaves the invitations and room request open. A classmate who says “The families are already invited” would go beyond both the verb pouvons and the stated discussion status.

When summarising a group’s decisions, preserve the modal verb or its meaning. “We plan to”, “we must” and “we could” carry different commitments. Keeping them separate helps the group know which next steps still need agreement or action.
