French decision-making expressions: 24 cards for weighing a choice

Practise 24 French decision-making chunks for considering options, choosing and reconsidering, with prepositions and examples that preserve the decision’s status.

In short

Keep considering, choosing and reconsidering distinct: envisager une solution considers it, opter pour une solution chooses it, and revenir sur une décision revisits or changes a choice already made. Learn the prepositions inside the chunks: hésiter à, renoncer à, opter pour.

A decision conversation often changes stage as new information arrives. These decks let you say whether you are comparing possibilities, choosing one or reviewing an earlier choice. The examples also show the reason or time, so a short expression does not become a vague announcement that everything is settled.

Entre names alternatives; à introduces the action

Hésiter entre deux options identifies competing possibilities. Hésiter à accepter identifies the action the person is uncertain about doing. The two constructions answer different questions. If the alternatives are already clear, hésiter à accepter can focus on the remaining decision without listing both again.

J’hésite entre deux formations, et j’hésite à accepter la première sans visiter le centre.

I’m undecided between two courses, and I’m hesitant to accept the first without visiting the centre.

A change of mind is not the same as a delay

Reporter sa décision moves the decision to a later time. Changer d’avis changes the view itself. Maintenir son choix means keeping the choice despite new discussion. Revenir sur une décision can describe revisiting it; the example explicitly adds a refusal to show that the earlier decision has been reversed there.
