Gap-fill

French emotion gap-fill: relieved about one thing, worried about another

Complete a French message that contrasts relief about a confirmed room with worry about a delivery, using precise emotion complements.

In short

Keep the two causes separate: soulagée d’avoir une salle describes relief about a confirmed room, while inquiète pour la livraison names the unresolved concern. Follow pronouns back to their nouns, and use the complement required by each expression.

Léa is organising a small exhibition. The room is now confirmed, but the display panels have not arrived. Her message can sound contradictory if you treat every emotion as a reaction to the same event. Here, read the confirmed fact first, then the issue that remains open.

Read it in English

Hello Nora, I’m relieved finally to have a room. The manager confirmed our booking this morning. I thank her for her quick reply.

However, I’m still worried about the delivery of the panels. They should arrive on Friday, but we don’t yet know the exact time. I hope they will arrive before closing.

I would like you to call the carrier on Thursday. We need to know whether someone must be there all day. Could you ask him to let us know an hour before he arrives?

I am grateful to the volunteers who are keeping time free to help us. I’m glad they can come on Saturday. Thank you for listening to me yesterday: that helped me distinguish the two problems.

Track la, ils and lui

In Je la remercie, la refers to la responsable. The first ils refers to les panneaux; the final ils in qu’ils puissent venir refers to les bénévoles. In lui demander, lui refers to the transporteur named in the preceding sentence. A plural pronoun does not keep the same referent throughout a message merely because its spelling stays unchanged.

Look at what each tense contributes

The confirmation has happened already. Arriveront describes the hoped-for future delivery after affirmative j’espère que. The hints identify the intended tense, mood and agreement for each gap.

For your own message, write one sentence naming what is settled and one naming what remains uncertain. Then make a single request that addresses the uncertain part. This makes it easier for the recipient to respond to the actual practical question.
