French exhibition vocabulary: labels, rooms and guided tours

Learn twenty-four French exhibition words for artwork labels, gallery rooms, cloakrooms and guided activities, with concrete picture cards and visitor examples.

In short

A cartel is the small label identifying an artwork; a socle supports a sculpture. For activities, distinguish une visite commentée, a guided visit with commentary, from un atelier, a workshop. The twenty-four cards connect objects, visitor actions and programme details.

At an exhibition, the room signs, artwork labels and activity notices answer different questions. A room plan helps you navigate, a cartel identifies an object, and a booking line tells you how to join an activity. Learn each word in the sentence that shows what the visitor does with it.

Read cartel in its gallery context

The French word cartel here names the small printed label near an artwork. It can give the artist, title, date and material. It is not the frame around the work. Un cadre is that frame; un socle is the base under an object. The physical position helps keep the nouns distinct.

An exhibition and its activities can have different rules

Une visite commentée provides commentary along a visitor route. Un atelier normally invites participants to do an activity. A programme can require reservations for one and allow free access to another. Complet agrees with the activity noun: un atelier complet, une visite complète.
