In short
Look for the speaker and the stance towards the label. Je me définis comme… introduces self-description; on me présente comme… attributes a label to others; je refuse cette étiquette rejects it. Quoting a label is not the same as accepting it.
Yellow the idea to rememberBlue French to learn

A narrator describes how people introduce her at different events. The same label can be used, quoted or contested in different sentences. Your task is to follow the local wording, rather than decide what category the narrator should belong to.
| Cue | What it does |
|---|---|
| Je me définis comme… | Gives the narrator’s chosen description. |
| Les organisateurs me présentent comme… | Attributes a description to the organisers. |
| Je ne me reconnais pas dans… | Distances the narrator from a label. |
| Ce qui me définit ici, c’est… | Focuses on a self-selected feature in this context. |

Retain the distance in a summary
A faithful summary can say le programme la présente comme…, followed by the label. It should not silently become elle est…. If the narrator rejects the term, include that rejection: elle conteste cette présentation. This matters especially when the quoted expression is vivid and easy to remember: the memorable words may belong to the voice she is challenging.
Try rewriting one excerpt as a third-person summary. Keep both layers: who introduced the label and whether the narrator accepted it. Do not supply acceptance or rejection where the excerpt only reports someone else’s wording.
