French noun plurals: add s and change the whole phrase

Make French nouns plural with s, keep nouns ending in s, x or z unchanged, and practise articles, adjectives and verbs with illustrated home vocabulary.

In short

Most French nouns add -s in the plural: une table → des tables. Change the article and any agreeing adjective too: une table ronde → des tables rondes. A noun already ending in s, x or z keeps its spelling.

Regular plurals · one becomes several

1 · Add s to the noun

The noun keeps its gender. A feminine singular noun becomes feminine plural.

une table → des tablesa table → tables

un placard → des placardsa cupboard → cupboards

2 · Change the article

Un and une become des. Definite le, la and l’ become les.

le lit → les litsthe bed → the beds

la fenêtre → les fenêtresthe window → the windows

l’appartement → les appartementsthe flat → the flats

3 · Check the adjective

For these regular adjectives, add -s to the singular form.

un placard blanc → des placards blancsa white cupboard → white cupboards

une table ronde → des tables rondesa round table → round tables

4 · Already s, x or z? Keep the noun

The article or number still shows the plural.

un tapis → des tapisa rug → rugs

un prix → des prixa price → prices

un nez → des neza nose → noses

5 · Change the verb when the subject becomes plural

With être, singular est becomes plural sont.

La fenêtre est ouverte. Les fenêtres sont ouvertes. The window is open. The windows are open.

In deux tables or trois placards, the number replaces des and the noun still takes its plural ending. The plural -s on these nouns is usually silent. In le lit and les lits, the article helps you hear the difference even though the noun sounds the same.

Some common nouns use a different plural: un journal → des journaux, un bateau → des bateaux. Keep those pairs together as you meet them. For the regular pattern here, check the complete phrase: article, noun, adjective, then the verb when that phrase is the subject.
