Rooms and furniture in French: house vocabulary

Start with the plan of a flat, then learn the words room by room, each with its article and a sentence you could actually say at home.

Two bedrooms, a living room and a dining room: in a French advert this is un quatre-pièces, because only the main rooms count, not the kitchen, bathroom or hall.

Floors and flats

Four phrases that confuse English speakers

Au rez-de-chaussée means on the ground floor. Au premier étage is the floor above it: the first floor in British English, the second floor in American English.

Flats are described by their main rooms: un studio has one room, un deux-pièces usually has a living room and one bedroom.

La chambre donne sur la rue means the bedroom looks out onto the street. You will see donner sur in every flat advert.

Where only l’ or les shows in the list, the gender is marked: m. or f.
