French action verbs: practise three-step sequences

Practise French action verbs through making a drink, folding a map and tidying up. Complete present-tense sentences with clear action cues.

In short

Give each verb an object and put three actions in order: Je déplie la carte, je cherche la rue, puis je replie la carte. Use d’abord, ensuite and enfin when you want to make the steps explicit.

A drinkJe prends un verre.Je verse de l’eau.Je pose la carafe.
A mapJe déplie la carte.Je cherche la rue.Je replie la carte.
A tidy tableJe plie le torchon.Je range les assiettes.Je ferme le placard.

Give the action a clear object

verserto pour

Focus: Move liquid into a container.

verser + liquid + dans

Elle verse l’eau dans le verre.
She pours the water into the glass.

renverserto spill

Focus: Here, the liquid ends up on the table.

renverser + liquid + sur

Elle renverse de l’eau sur la table.
She spills some water on the table.

The destination helps you see the difference: dans le verre puts the water in the glass; sur la table puts it on the table. For a map, déplier opens out the folds and replier folds it up again. Say the object again when the next action changes it: Je verse l’eau, puis je pose la carafe.
