C2 French literary revision: what a recovered page changes

Read a manuscript fragment and its continuation, then revise a critical response. Distinguish an archival gap, an open door and a suspended return.

In short

Withdraw the conclusion that relied on the missing continuation. Keep the details that still hold, then explain how the recovered page changes their significance: the scene continues, the door is ajar and the character still pauses outside.

Le retour suspendu

Feuillet A

Read it in English

Leaf A: She stopped in front of the house. The window was empty. File note: the text breaks off at the bottom of the preserved leaf.

Leaf B, recovered later: She went round the house and found the garden door ajar. She did not go in. On the table, someone had left the letter she thought was lost. File note: this leaf follows the previous one. The end of the story remains unknown.

The first interpretation: where does it overreach?

The narrative denies its character every possibility of return. The empty window closes the place definitively, and the absence of a continuation makes this separation the culmination of the passage.

Four concrete details carrying the interpretation

A stronger revision changes the argument at its hinge: the supposed absence of a continuation. It can then keep the empty window as a trace of separation while reading the door and letter as a new opening. Désormais marks the changed reading; demeure preserves what survives from the earlier one.

Write your revised paragraph

Revise the initial response using leaf B. Identify the conclusion you withdraw, the details you retain and your new interpretation. Use the door, the letter and the character’s action as evidence. End with what remains open. Write at least 100 words for this focused practice.

Build the revision in four moves

  • Name the premise that has changed.
  • Read the door and letter alongside the empty window.
  • Keep the character’s decision to remain outside.
  • End with a precise unresolved question.

The recovered leaf requires us to reconsider the closure that the first reading attributed to the passage. A material break in the text had been taken for a narrative endpoint; the continuation now shifts the gaze from the empty window to the ajar door. The door creates a possibility of return, while the letter restores a link the character thought lost. Yet separation remains palpable: she does not enter. I would therefore read this scene as a suspended approach to the place, where access becomes possible again but has yet to become an accomplished return. As for the letter, its presence opens a question rather than answering one: who placed it there, and what connection does it maintain with the house?

Question 1No account needed
Which conclusion must change after leaf B?

Choose one answer.

Answer and explanation

The preserved passage has no continuation.. Leaf B is explicitly identified as the next leaf, so the claim of an absent continuation falls.

Question 2No account needed
Which reading preserves the tension in leaf B?

Choose one answer.

Answer and explanation

The door offers access, but the character remains outside.. The ajar door and elle n’entra pas combine possibility with a pause at the threshold.
