In short
Grouping words is a fast way to learn them: fruits (la pomme, la poire, la pêche), vegetables (le poireau, la carotte), fish (le saumon, le thon), cutlery (la fourchette, le couteau) and the courses of a meal (l'entrée, le plat, le dessert).

Tap the word that doesn't belong in each row.
Le poireau (leek) is a vegetable; the others are fruits. Careful: poire and poireau look alike!
Le chorizo is a Spanish sausage. Brie, comté, chèvre are French cheeses.
Le poulet (chicken) is meat. Salmon, tuna and cod are fish.
Une casserole is a saucepan for cooking. The others are cutlery (les couverts).
Goûter is to taste (and the afternoon snack). The others are ways of cooking.
Le jus (juice) has no alcohol; wine, beer and cider do.
L'addition is the bill, not a course. Careful: in France l'entrée is the starter.
Le yaourt comes from the dairy aisle; the others come from the boulangerie.
How are French food words grouped?
Two famous traps: in France l'entrée is the starter (not the main course, as in American English), and le goûter is the 4 pm snack French children eat after school.
