Sans doute a-t-elle oublié: French statement inversion

Turn ordinary sentences into formal statements with sans doute. Practise subject pronouns, auxiliaries, hyphens and negative word order.

In short

Sans doute a-t-elle oublié is a statement: she probably forgot. In formal French, sans doute can be followed by subject–verb inversion; an ordinary version is Elle a sans doute oublié. The inversion changes the style, while sans doute commonly means probably.

Keep the meaning; change the order
Ordinary orderFormal statement
Elle a sans doute répondu.Sans doute a-t-elle répondu.
Le débat est sans doute terminé.Sans doute le débat est-il terminé.
Les lecteurs ont sans doute compris.Sans doute les lecteurs ont-ils compris.
Elle n’a sans doute pas compris.Sans doute n’a-t-elle pas compris.

With a pronoun subject, put the conjugated verb or auxiliary first: a-t-elle. With a noun subject, keep the noun and add a matching pronoun: le débat est-il. The plural masculine les lecteurs needs ils. A compound tense keeps the participle after the inverted group: ont-ils compris.

Three details to keep

  • A-t-elle has two hyphens around the added t. In est-il and ont-ils, the verb already ends in t, so add only the hyphen.
  • A negative statement keeps ne or n’ before the verb and pas after the subject pronoun: n’a-t-elle pas compris.
  • End a statement with a full stop. A-t-elle compris ? is a question; Sans doute a-t-elle compris. offers a probable explanation.

Ordinary order is also possible after initial sans doute. For everyday use, placing it inside the clause gives an easy model: Les lecteurs ont sans doute compris. In a concession, Sans doute le projet est-il ambitieux, mais… can mean “The project may well be ambitious, but…”

Read the whole statement

Sans doute le débat a-t-il duré plus longtemps que prévu.

The debate probably lasted longer than expected.

Someone is offering an explanation for the delay. A natural English translation keeps probably. For the stronger idea beyond doubt, French has sans aucun doute. The noun débat is masculine singular, so its resumptive pronoun is il, even when several people took part.

Why is there inversion after sans doute?

Write just the missing verb–pronoun group. Keep the tense in the hint. For negative rows, the sentence already supplies n’ and pas.
