How do you talk about the weather in French?
| Frame | Complete answer | What follows |
|---|---|---|
| Il fait… | Il fait froid. | An adjective describing the weather. |
| Il y a… | Il y a du vent. | A noun with its article. |
| Il… | Il pleut. | A weather verb, already conjugated. |
Il neige, mais il n’y a pas encore de neige sur la route.
It’s snowing, but there isn’t any snow on the road yet.
Il neige describes falling snow. Il y a de la neige says snow is present somewhere.
Separate the weather from how you feel: Il fait froid means the weather is cold; j’ai froid means you feel cold. With a negative quantity, du vent becomes de vent: Il n’y a pas de vent.
