A French study's life: hypothesis, protocol, data and revised conclusion

Order a French study’s hypothesis, registered protocol, data collection and revised interpretation. Distinguish advance prediction from after-result explanation.

In short

Compare the wording with its date in the research sequence. A prediction recorded before collection is not the same as an explanation written after the outcome. Both may be useful, but report their timing accurately.

A research team expects a longer break to improve recall. Its protocol is registered before the task. The outcome is then mixed, and the discussion proposes an explanation involving familiarity. Follow that sequence rather than reading the final interpretation back into the original prediction.

The team formulates the hypothesis that a long break will improve recall.
The protocol is registered with that prediction and the chosen score.
  3. Mars
Participants perform the task and scores are collected.
  4. 8 avril
The analysis shows an advantage only in one subgroup.
  5. 20 avril
The discussion proposes that task familiarity may explain that difference.
  6. Mai
A new protocol is prepared to test that explanation.

A later hypothesis can be tested next

The familiarity explanation is proposed after the first results. That does not make it useless, but it is not the registered prediction of the first study. The planned follow-up can turn it into a prediction for a new test. Keep the two investigations distinct when describing what was anticipated and what was discovered.

The first study predicted a general advantage; after analysis, the authors proposed an explanation specific to the subgroup.

Question 1No account needed
Which claim was recorded before data collection?

Choose one answer.

Answer and explanation

A long-break recall advantage. The February protocol records the prediction about a longer break before the March task.

Question 2No account needed
When was familiarity proposed as an explanation?

Choose one answer.

Answer and explanation

After the subgroup result. The discussion dated 20 April follows the 8 April analysis.

Question 3No account needed
What would the new protocol test?

Choose one answer.

Answer and explanation

The proposed familiarity explanation. The timeline explicitly prepares a new investigation to test the later explanation.

They describe the evidence history without implying that every unexpected finding is invalid or every registered prediction is correct.
