A1 French reading: a visitor arrives one week early

Read an A1 French story about an empty meeting room. Use this week, next week and an exact date to discover why the visitor arrived early.

In short

Cette semaine means “this week”; la semaine prochaine means “next week”. In this story, the invitation names mardi 13 octobre. That exact date explains why the room is empty on mardi 6 octobre: the visitor has arrived one week early.

Read the message inside the story as carefully as the visitor should have. The weekday matches on both dates, so mardi alone cannot solve the problem. Find the day number as well. The story is set in October 2026, when 6 October and 13 October both fall on a Tuesday.

Read it in English

This Tuesday, 6 October, Elsa arrives at the neighbourhood centre at six in the evening. She wants to take part in a French gathering. She is carrying a small notebook and a pen. Outside the room, she looks at her watch. She is on time, but the room is empty.

Elsa sees a man in the corridor. “Hello, I’m looking for the French group. Is it here?” The man replies: “Yes, but there is no meeting today. Do you have a message?”

Elsa opens her phone. She reads the message from Monday, 5 October: “Hello Elsa! This week, the room is closed. Our first meeting is next week, Tuesday, 13 October, at six in the evening. Meet outside room 2. See you soon! Nadia.”

Elsa looks at the date on her phone. “Ah! Today is the sixth. I’m here a week too early!” The man smiles. “Yes, come back next Tuesday.” Elsa writes 13 October in her notebook. She also adds a reminder on her phone.

Before leaving, she writes to Nadia: “Thanks for the message. See you on Tuesday, 13 October!” This time, the date is clear. Elsa has a week to prepare her introduction.

Read relative dates from the message’s date

Cette semaine and la semaine prochaine depend on when the message was written. Nadia sends it on Monday 5 October. Next week therefore includes Tuesday 13 October. Elsa’s confirmation repeats the exact date rather than only saying mardi prochain. That makes the reply clear even if Nadia reads it later.

À mardi 13 octobre, à dix-huit heures !

See you on Tuesday, 13 October, at six in the evening!
