In short
A rhetorical apostrophe turns the discourse towards a directly addressed being, object or idea. It can address someone absent, the dead, a place or an abstraction as though it could hear. This is a rhetorical use of address, distinct from the apostrophe punctuation mark.

The examples here are newly written teaching passages, not literary quotations. Read whom the voice addresses and what the turn achieves. A ceremonial ô can signal the device, but its presence is not necessary and its absence does not rule it out.

The turn changes the scene of speech
In the memory example, a statement about remembering becomes a complaint directed at memory itself. The device gives the abstract faculty the position of a hearer. It need not make that hearer speak: an imagined answer or a fully speaking personification would add another rhetorical development.
| Term in context | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Une apostrophe dans l’assemblée | An address or sharp remark directed at someone, depending on context. |
| Une apostrophe à la liberté | A rhetorical address to an abstraction. |
| L’apostrophe dans l’enfant | The punctuation mark marking elision. |
Recognise the elevated effect without transferring it automatically into everyday conversation. Addressing ô procédure during a routine scheduling discussion would usually introduce deliberate theatricality or humour. The register and purpose determine whether that change helps the speech.
