Annotate a French headline for reading: don't stress every word

Annotate six French headline structures for reading aloud by keeping meaning groups intact and highlighting the real contrast.

In short

Find the headline’s main contrast and group the remaining words around it. In annoncée, mais pas confirmée, the status contrast matters. Avoid giving every short word equal emphasis or breaking a noun group merely because the line wraps on screen.

Six written rehearsal rules

1 · Name the contrast

Focus the meaningful opposition, such as planned versus confirmed.

Une date annoncée, mais pas encore confirmée.An announced date, but not yet confirmed.

2 · Keep the noun group

Avoid separating a determiner from its noun in rehearsal.

La nouvelle salle / ouvre lundi. The new room opens on Monday.

3 · Keep number and unit together

Read a complete numerical expression as a recoverable group.

Une hausse de dix pour cent / sur un an.A rise of ten per cent over a year.

4 · Attach attribution

Keep the source phrase linked to the following claim.

Selon le rapport / le nombre reste stable.According to the report, the number remains stable.

5 · Distinguish question from claim

A question headline does not establish its proposed answer.

Une ouverture durable ? / Le bilan reste incomplet.A lasting opening? The assessment remains incomplete.

6 · Close the whole headline

Find its full scope before planning finality.

Deux créneaux supprimés / à partir de septembre. Two slots removed from September.

The headline’s claim controls the plan

A headline can announce an event, attribute a claim or ask a question. Preserve that function when planning the reading. Une ouverture durable ? leaves durability open. Reading it as though it stated une ouverture durable would obscure the question, even if every word were pronounced clearly.

Question 1No account needed
Which contrast is central in “annoncée, mais pas confirmée”?

Choose one answer.

Answer and explanation

Announcement versus confirmation. The point is the status difference, not equal emphasis on every word.

Question 2No account needed
Where does this rehearsal slash preserve a noun group?

Choose one answer.

Answer and explanation

La nouvelle salle / ouvre lundi.. The full noun group stays together before its predicate.

Question 3No account needed
What does the slash specify?

Choose one answer.

Answer and explanation

A planning boundary for meaning. The mark supports written rehearsal and does not supply acoustic measurements.

After marking the groups, paraphrase the headline in a full sentence. If the paraphrase adds an agent, certainty or result that the headline never states, revise your interpretation before practising the line. Delivery planning should make the intended claim clear rather than compensate for an inaccurate reading.
