Text conversation

At the wrong bus stop: a beginner French text conversation

Choose French texts that clarify a bus stop’s direction and street side. Move from the Stade side to the Gare side and confirm a precise meeting landmark.

In short

Name the direction printed at the stop, not only the stop name: Je suis à Centre, direction Stade. In this exchange, the meeting is at Centre, direction Gare, in front of the library. The opposite side by the bank has the same stop name but the wrong direction.

Both stops are called Centre. One is in front of the bank and marked direction Stade; the other is in front of the library and marked direction Gare. You are at the bank side. Your friend wants to meet at the library side. The written key supplies the complete layout for the conversation.

SamiRendez-vous à l’arrêt Centre
  1. Je te retrouve à l’arrêt Centre, direction Gare. Tu es où ?I’ll meet you at Centre stop, toward the station. Where are you?
  2. State your actual current side rather than pretending you are at the meeting stop.

  3. Tu es de l’autre côté. L’arrêt direction Gare est devant la bibliothèque. You are on the other side. The stop toward the station is in front of the library.
  4. Say you are going to the correctly identified stop.

  5. Parfait. J’arrive dans cinq minutes. Attends à côté du panneau « Gare ».Perfect. I’ll arrive in five minutes. Wait beside the “Gare” sign.
  6. Confirm a precise final position at the agreed side.

A stop name can appear for both directions

Centre identifies the named stop pair, but it does not distinguish the street sides in this exercise. Direction Gare supplies the direction of travel. Devant la bibliothèque supplies the physical landmark. Keeping both in a message makes the meeting point more precise than Je suis à Centre alone.

Je suis du côté de la bibliothèque, pas du côté de la banque.

I am on the library side, not the bank side.

Dans cinq minutes means five minutes from the message time, not at five o’clock. The final reply confirms that you will wait beside the Gare sign in front of the library while Sami comes to meet you.
