B1 French story: a spare key and assumed permission

Read a B1 French story about a spare workshop key, an unheard intention and assumed permission, then distinguish instructions, intentions and actual agreement.

In short

A promise to return a key and an intention to notify its owner do not establish permission to lend it. In the story, Nora’s instruction concerns a delivery. Léa and Omar each add an assumption. Track the source of each statement before deciding what anyone actually agreed to.

The story separates an instruction received, a promise made and an intention that no one heard. Follow what each person knows, then ask what would still have been missing even if that intention had been heard.

B1 · Responsibility and regret

Léa a dit : « Je vais prévenir4 Nora.

Read it in English

Nora had entrusted the spare key to her workshop to Léa. She had asked her to keep it for a delivery scheduled on Friday. Léa had promised to return it immediately afterwards. No other use had been discussed.

On Thursday, Omar asked Léa whether he could enter the workshop to collect a poster. She handed him the key. At the same moment, a vacuum cleaner started. Léa said, “I’ll let Nora know.” Omar did not hear that sentence.

Léa received a call before sending her message. She forgot to tell Nora. Omar thought Nora had agreed: if Léa had the spare, she must be allowed to lend it. He collected the poster and brought the key back that evening.

On Friday, Nora learned of the visit while talking to Omar. She asked Léa why she had lent the spare. Léa replied, “I had said I would let you know.” Nora clarified, “You hadn’t told me, and I hadn’t authorised you to lend it.”

In retracing the facts, Léa distinguished three things: she had received a delivery instruction, promised to return the key and announced an intention to tell Nora. That intention, even if heard, would not have constituted Nora’s agreement.

Léa returned the spare after the delivery and apologised for lending it. “I should have asked you first,” she said. Omar acknowledged his assumption. For the future, they decided to seek explicit agreement before any other use rather than guessing what possession of a key allowed.

Question 1No account needed
Why did Nora give Léa the spare?

Choose one answer.

Answer and explanation

For a planned Friday delivery. The original instruction concerns keeping the key for the delivery.

Question 2No account needed
What did Léa’s unheard sentence announce?

Choose one answer.

Answer and explanation

Léa’s intention to tell Nora. Je vais prévenir describes a future intention, not permission or completed notification.

Question 3No account needed
What did Omar assume?

Choose one answer.

Answer and explanation

That possessing the spare included permission to lend it. The story explicitly names his inference from possession.

Question 4No account needed
Would hearing Léa’s intention alone have supplied Nora’s agreement?

Choose one answer.

Answer and explanation

No.. Notification and the owner’s acceptance remain distinct actions.

J’aurais dû describes the alternative afterwards

J’aurais dû te demander avant names the action Léa now thinks she should have taken. It does not rewrite the earlier instruction or make the missing agreement appear. The group’s later arrangement addresses the practical cause: asking explicitly before a different use.

A careful summary identifies each person’s contribution without claiming that every misunderstanding has one source. Léa lends and forgets to notify; Omar assumes authority from possession; Nora clarifies the original scope. That is more precise than saying simply “everyone had agreed”.
