B2 French story: the graph that hid the non-responders

Read a B2 French research story where a graph excludes missing responses. Track how the conclusion changes when non-responders are made explicit.

In short

A graph of respondents describes respondents unless the method supports a broader inference. Missing replies cannot silently become positive answers. In the story, making non-response visible narrows the claim the students can defend.

A class surveys a reading workshop. The initial graph looks overwhelmingly positive, but only some invitees answered. Read for the denominator and for the point where the students change their wording.

Lina and Karim sent a questionnaire to fifty reading-workshop participants. Twenty replied, and sixteen wanted it extended. Lina prepared a graph with a large green area and an enthusiastic title: “Four participants out of five want to continue.”

Karim noticed that participants was too broad. The sixteen favourable replies were 80% of the twenty responses, not 80% of all fifty contacted. Thirty people had given no view.

Lina proposed a neutral category. Karim agreed, provided it was not labelled “no opinion”. Silence could have several causes, and their opinions remained unknown.

They redrew the graph with sixteen favourable replies, four other replies and thirty non-responses. The green area looked less striking, but the favourable result among respondents stayed the same.

Lina explained the correction in the presentation. A large majority of respondents wanted to continue, but not everyone’s view was known. The organiser proposed following up with those who had not replied. The group could now discuss both the result and its limit.

Question 1No account needed
What is 16 as a share of the 20 replies?

Choose one answer.

Answer and explanation

80%. Sixteen divided by twenty is 0.8, or 80% of respondents.

Question 2No account needed
What do the thirty missing replies establish about opinion?

Choose one answer.

Answer and explanation

Their opinion is not known from the survey. Non-response alone does not establish agreement, disagreement or absence of opinion.

Question 3No account needed
Which noun fits the 80% claim?

Choose one answer.

Answer and explanation

Répondants. The denominator is the twenty people who replied, so répondants preserves the supported group.
