B2 French story: the greener option with a missing journey

Read a B2 French story about a greener delivery option with one missing journey stage. Restore the comparison’s scope with glosses and questions.

In short

Check that both options cover the same journey from start to finish. An option can look better when its collection stage is omitted. In the story, restoring the missing journey changes what the group can conclude.

B2 · Scope of a comparison

Read it in English

The committee was preparing a neighbourhood exhibition. Hugo proposed bicycle delivery of the panels from the workshop. His table made that option look clearly preferable to the usual carrier. “Are we comparing the same service?” Mina asked, examining the calculation’s scope.

Hugo said both columns covered delivery. Yet the first covered only the journey from the workshop, while the second included collection from the printer and transit through the carrier’s warehouse. Mina asked how the panels would reach the workshop. Silence followed. Hugo planned to collect them in a van the day before.

That journey had not been included. Hugo regarded it as preparation, separate from delivery. Mina pointed out that the carrier already provided collection. The columns therefore covered different stages.

The committee added the van journey and compared the arrangements from end to end. The gap narrowed. The data no longer supported presenting the bicycle option as systematically preferable in this specific arrangement. Hugo proposed combining several collections in one trip.

The group requested a new calculation before deciding. Mina replaced the table’s heading with a question: “Exactly which service are we comparing?” This time everyone could see the starting point, destination and all intermediate stages.

Question 1No account needed
Which stage was omitted?

Choose one answer.

Answer and explanation

Collecting panels by van. Hugo planned a van collection before bicycle delivery, but had left it outside the first calculation.

Question 2No account needed
What changes when that stage is added?

Choose one answer.

Answer and explanation

The gap narrows. The story states that the gap narrows and a new calculation is requested. It gives no universal verdict on transport modes.

Question 3No account needed
What is the central comparison problem?

Choose one answer.

Answer and explanation

Different system boundaries. One column included a collection stage that the other excluded, so the services were not initially compared end to end.
