Chiasmus in French: reverse the structure without reversing the logic

Match French chiasmus structures to their plain propositions. Identify ABBA crossing and distinguish a reversed structure from simple opposition.

In short

A chiasmus crosses corresponding elements in an ABBA pattern. In adapter l’outil à l’usager, non l’usager à l’outil, the order is tool–user / user–tool. Explain the relation that crossing supports rather than treating reversal alone as proof.

A neat crossed sentence can clarify a priority, reciprocity or contrast. It can also sound persuasive while leaving its premise unsupported. The task pairs each construction with its plain proposition and includes a simple antithesis as a contrast case.

A crossing can state a criterion without justifying it

The tool–user crossing gives a priority. To defend that priority, explain the service’s purpose or the consequences of the design choice. The figure makes the relation salient; it does not replace the reason why that relation is desirable. Similarly, reciprocal syntax does not prove that the support is equal in practice.

La formule oppose deux priorités ; le paragraphe suivant doit expliquer pourquoi l’une sert mieux l’objectif annoncé.

The formula contrasts two priorities; the following paragraph must explain why one better serves the stated aim.

Question 1No account needed
Which pattern is the target?

Choose one answer.

Answer and explanation

ABBA. The defining crossing reverses corresponding elements from A–B to B–A.

Question 2No account needed
Does every antithesis contain a chiasmus?

Choose one answer.

Answer and explanation

No. Opposition can occur without repeated elements in crossed order.

When reading, recover the two elements and the verbs connecting them. When writing, check that reversing the elements has not created a claim you cannot defend. Clarity of proposition is more valuable than symmetry alone.
