In short
Track what the speaker still commits to after the concession. Je reconnais ce coût grants a point; je limite ma proposition à un essai narrows the thesis; je retire ma proposition abandons it. Counting certes and mais cannot establish which change occurred.

This original four-turn exchange follows a proposal for evening access. The speaker accepts a staffing constraint but preserves a limited trial. A separate final example shows what explicit abandonment would sound like.
The team cannot sustain that workload without reducing morning reception.
I acknowledge that this schedule is unsustainable with current resources.
I therefore limit my proposal to one evening weekly for three months, subject to agreement on schedules.
Compare the thesis before and after
Identify the population, frequency, duration and conditions of the initial claim, then compare those features with the final one. A substantial narrowing may be a major concession even if the speaker does not use certes. A decorative acknowledgement can leave every practical commitment unchanged.
I maintain the principle of a trial but abandon the daily schedule.
This formulation specifies both continuity and change. In a source account, preserve them together. Reporting only that the speaker maintained the proposal would hide the narrowing; reporting a complete retreat would hide the trial still defended.
