Convergent, compatible, contradictory: compare French source relationships

Compare five explicitly different relationships between French source statements, from convergence to contradiction, while treating silence as lack of evidence.

In short

Convergence shares a claim; compatibility allows claims to coexist; contradiction makes them incompatible in the same scope. Tension may disappear once an exception or difference in scope is explained. A source’s silence about an issue is not its agreement with another source.

Three pairs of abstract stone forms are arranged on a shelf; two pairs interlock and the middle pair stands side by side.

Each step below supplies a different possible source B. They are alternatives, not five documents to combine.

Increasing conflict with A’s precise opening claim

Incompatible same-scope claim

  1. B indique : « Ce même samedi, la bibliothèque sera fermée toute la matinée. »B states that on that same Saturday the library will be closed all morning.Contradiction: same venue, date and period, with incompatible opening claims.
  2. B indique que la bibliothèque est habituellement fermée le samedi matin.B states that the library is usually closed on Saturday mornings.Tension: a general usual pattern sits uneasily with A’s specific announced opening, which could be an exception.
Compatibility on different dimensions: both claims can hold, but B gives no confirmation of A’s hours.
»B states that visiting will be possible Saturday between ten and eleven.Partial overlap: this interval fits inside A’s announced opening, without confirming every hour.
»B also states that the library will open Saturday from nine to noon.Convergence: the same opening claim is explicitly made.

Same claim

Compare the relation, not the truth score

The sequence moves from explicit agreement toward direct conflict in this particular set of examples. It does not assign certainty percentages or rank every use of these adjectives universally. Compatibility is weaker than confirmation here because ramp access says nothing about opening times.

A contradiction needs a shared reference

Ce même samedi and toute la matinée make the final conflict precise. A different Saturday, a separate building or a different service could remove it. The fourth step says habituellement, so an exceptional opening remains possible. That makes it tension rather than an unavoidable contradiction.

The announced hours seem in tension with the usual rule; it is necessary to check whether this is an exceptional opening.

Question 1No account needed
B describes a ramp but no hours. Does that confirm A’s Saturday opening?

Choose one answer.

Answer and explanation

No; it concerns another dimension.. The claims can coexist, but B supplies no evidence about opening times.

Question 2No account needed
What makes the final pair contradictory?

Choose one answer.

Answer and explanation

The same venue and morning are both open and closed.. The reference and time coincide while the claims are incompatible.

Question 3No account needed
What does silence about opening hours establish?

Choose one answer.

Answer and explanation

No stated position about those hours.. Silence does not become endorsement or contradiction.

Before choosing a relationship word, state exactly which proposition you are comparing. Then check time, place, population and qualification. The label should summarise that comparison rather than replace it.
