Find a cross-source axis in a French synthesis dossier. Distinguish a topic word, a guiding question and a usable comparison category.

In short
A usable axis lets you compare what each source says about the same dimension. Numérique is a topic; qui doit financer les outils ? is a question; le financement et ses conditions is a comparison axis. The axis earns its place when the dossier supplies relevant positions.

This miniature dossier concerns a shared archive. Read each position before comparing the funding models. The statements below supply the information used in the matrix.
A — Un financement municipal garantirait la continuité du service et un accès public stable. La ville déciderait du budget, en concertation avec les usagers.
A — Municipal funding would guarantee continuity of service and stable public access. The city would decide the budget in consultation with users.
B — Les subventions peuvent cesser. Des abonnements rendraient l’archive moins dépendante de ces aides, à condition que les usagers y trouvent un intérêt suffisant pour contribuer. Les abonnés devraient être consultés sur les priorités.
B — Grants can stop. Subscriptions would make the archive less dependent on them, provided users see enough value in contributing. Subscribers should be consulted about priorities.
C — Un financement mixte répartirait les risques. Il ne serait légitime que si les différents contributeurs participaient aux décisions.

Test the axis with a sentence
Les sources divergent sur les ressources à privilégier et les garanties ou conditions qu’elles leur associent.
The sources differ over which resources to prioritise and the guarantees or conditions they associate with them.
That sentence compares positions rather than announcing three consecutive summaries. An axis need not produce agreement. It can show that one source does not address a point, provided you say so instead of inventing a position to fill an empty cell.
Use a guiding question to keep the overall inquiry coherent, then choose a few dimensions that answer it. Repeating the same topic noun in every heading does not create a progression. Each section should establish a different relation supported by the dossier.
