DELF B1 writing: respond to a character's decision with reasons

Practise a reasoned B1 reaction to a character’s decision, using a supplied extract, a complete model and a concrete alternative interpretation.

In short

State your judgement, cite one event and explain why it matters. Then consider another character’s possible reading before proposing an alternative. Retelling the decision supplies context; your reasons and response make it an argument.

This original preparation task practises a coherent personal opinion at B1. It uses a short original situation rather than asking you to know a novel. The complete model demonstrates one defensible view. You may disagree with that view if you support your own response with the supplied details.

Situation originale · La lettre

Use these details. The letter’s private contents are not supplied.

(160 mots minimum)

Give your opinion of Inès’s decision on your reading-group forum. Use an event from the extract, consider Malik’s perspective and propose another way to continue the conversation. Write at least 160 words.

What makes the model an argument?

The offer to share permitted news supports the model’s interpretation that Inès is preserving a boundary while participating. J’y vois and À mon avis mark that reading. The model does not know her brother’s private wishes in full; it proposes asking him. Malik is described as appearing disappointed. His hope of receiving an answer and his possible feeling of being distrusted remain interpretations, marked by peut-être and Il pourrait croire.

Question 1No account needed
Which fact can directly support an argument about Inès’s effort to participate?

Choose one answer.

Answer and explanation

She offers to share permitted news.. The offer is explicitly present; the other claims add facts not supplied.

Question 2No account needed
What does “Il pourrait croire…” do in the model?

Choose one answer.

Answer and explanation

Mark a possible interpretation of his reaction.. The conditional presents a possibility rather than claiming access to an unstated thought.

Question 3No account needed
What should a different opinion still include?

Choose one answer.

Answer and explanation

Reasons linked to the given situation.. A different judgement is possible, but it still needs textual support.

Before writing, separate three notes: what happens, what you infer and what you would suggest. Build your paragraphs from those notes in that order. This gives your response a clear basis without making the interpretation sound like an additional event in the story.
