Myth or fact
Does bilingue mean equal confidence in every French-speaking situation?
Read a bilingual French profile that separates daily use, writing, family humour and professional confidence instead of treating bilingual as an all-or-nothing score.

In short
Bilingue does not by itself specify identical confidence in every domain. A profile may describe two-language use alongside differences in conversation, specialist writing or family references. Ask what the person does in each context instead of inferring a complete skill profile from one label.

Profil · Maya
Decide before you see the verdict.
VraiThe profile explicitly gives daily use of both languages.
FauxThe profile’s self-description does not assert identical confidence across all tasks.
FauxConversation and specialist legal writing are distinct domains; no such ability is supplied.
VraiThe profile states this use directly.
VraiThis domain-specific comfort is explicitly mentioned.
VraiA domain question clarifies use without denying the chosen bilingual label.
FauxThe activity provides a chosen description and specific practices, not a universal identity test.
A domain is more precise than a global judgement
Animer une réunion, rédiger un compte rendu and comprendre une plaisanterie familiale involve different knowledge and routines. Maya’s use of a writing model in one task does not erase her everyday Spanish. Her ease in family conversation does not establish mastery of every specialist document.

Clarify requirements when the context needs them
A job advertisement using bilingue may have particular expectations, such as handling client calls and writing reports in both languages. Those requirements should be checked explicitly. The word alone does not replace a list of actual tasks or a person’s description of their own experience.
Describe ability through situations when precision matters. Keep a person’s chosen label and the task-specific information side by side rather than treating one as a reason to dismiss the other.
