In short
With envoyer un message à quelqu’un, the person receiving it becomes me, te, lui, nous, vous or leur. Use lui for one person and leur for several. Fill twelve gaps by following who is speaking and who receives each message.

| Recipient | Pronoun | Example |
|---|---|---|
| to me | me / m’ | Tu me réponds. |
| to you, one friend | te / t’ | Je te réponds. |
| to him or her | lui | On lui répond. |
| to us | nous | Elle nous répond. |
| to you, polite or plural | vous | Je vous réponds. |
| to them | leur | On leur répond. |
The pronoun stays close to its own verb: je lui écris, je lui ai écrit, je vais lui écrire. In a quotation, read from the speaker’s position: “to me” refers to the person whose words are inside the quotation marks.

A colleague spoke on behalf of the whole team: “Can you explain this message to us?” Emma wrote to her colleagues: “I wanted to invite my friends. I’m going to send you the work document in another message.” Then she called her friend Léo to tell him about her mistake.
Léo offered: “I can give you the right link.” Emma replied, “Thanks! Can you forward me the group’s address?” Léo sent her the link. Emma finally wrote to her friends to invite them to dinner.
She also wrote to Nadia to apologise. Nadia replied: “No problem. You can send me the document tomorrow.” That evening, Emma’s friends confirmed to her that they were coming. This time, the invitation had reached the right people.
