Check the French construction. English "phone her" gives je lui téléphone, while "listen to her" gives je l’écoute. French uses téléphoner à quelqu’un for the first and écouter quelqu’un directly for the second.

  • téléphoner à quelqu’unJe la téléphone.Je lui téléphone.

Ma sœur ? Je lui téléphone demain. My sister? I’m phoning her tomorrow.

Use lui for a man or a woman: Je téléphone à Paul → Je lui téléphone.

  • parler à plusieurs personnesJe les parle.Je leur parle.

Les clientes ? Je leur parle maintenant. The customers? I’m speaking to them now.

Count the recipients. One woman takes lui; several women take leur. The object being discussed has no effect on this choice.

  • penser à quelqu’unJe lui pense.Je pense à elle.

Je pense à Nora. Je pense à elle.I’m thinking about Nora. I’m thinking about her.

Replace the person with elle or lui after à: à elle, à lui. Learn this complete pattern alongside Je lui parle.

  • leurJe leurs demande leurs adresses.Je leur demande leurs adresses.

Je leur demande leurs adresses.I ask them for their addresses.

The first leur belongs to demande and stays unchanged. Leurs introduces plural adresses and is a possessive.

  • aller + infinitifJe leur vais répondre.Je vais leur répondre.

Je vais leur répondre demain.I’m going to reply to them tomorrow.

The recipients belong to répondre, so write je vais leur répondre. The same pattern gives je peux lui écrire.
