French belonging corrections: attaché à, originaire de and installé à

Repair six French profile sentences with attaché à, originaire de, installé à and related complements while keeping origin, residence and attachment distinct.

In short

Use originaire de for origin, installé à for residence in a city, and attaché à for an emotional connection. These facts can differ for the same person. The preposition helps express the intended relation; it does not decide the person’s identity.

A key, a smooth stone and a familiar path token suggest residence, origin and emotional attachment as separate relations to place.

Each English line below gives the intended meaning. The task changes one faulty token while preserving that meaning. Each profile supplies its own context. Living in one country does not erase an attachment to a town elsewhere, and an origin statement does not establish a current address.

Repair the complement for the intended relation

Tap the word that's wrong in each sentence.

  1. She is attached to this neighbourhood.

  2. He is originally from Toulouse.

  3. We have been living in Lille for two years.

  4. She feels close to her neighbours.

  5. He values his family habits.

  6. They live in Belgium and remain attached to their childhood town.

One person can have several place relations

Originaire de Toulouse, elle est installée à Lille et reste attachée au quartier de son enfance.

Originally from Toulouse, she lives in Lille and remains attached to her childhood neighbourhood.

The three phrases answer different questions. Originaire de gives the stated origin. Installée à identifies where she has made her home. Attachée au describes a connection. Au is the contraction of à and le before quartier; it does not change the underlying complement attaché à.

A different preposition may create another meaning

Tenir de can be grammatical in Il tient de son père, meaning that he takes after his father. The fifth repair instead targets valuing family habits, expressed by tenir à. The activity supplies the intended meaning so that you do not treat every occurrence of a different construction as an error.
