French clothing descriptions for lost property: 24 cards

Learn 24 French cards for describing lost clothes: garment names, stripes, pockets, hoods, sleeves and colours. Build one precise lost-property description.

In short

Name the garment, its colour and one distinctive detail: J’ai perdu une veste bleue avec une poche rouge. Use à rayures for striped, à capuche for hooded and à manches courtes for short-sleeved. A concrete detail helps distinguish your item from another of the same colour.

The twenty-four cards are organised for one practical task: giving a useful lost-property description. First choose the noun, then add a detail and a colour. You do not need to list every feature. One unusual pocket, pattern or hood can make the description easier to recognise.

Four visible identifying details

The colour follows the noun it describes

Une veste bleue has a feminine colour ending because veste is feminine. Un pull bleu uses the masculine form. In une veste bleue avec une poche rouge, bleue describes the jacket and rouge describes the pocket. The two colours need not be the same because they refer to different objects.

C’est un manteau noir avec deux poches et une fermeture éclair.

It is a black coat with two pockets and a zip.

À rayures and à capuche are useful fixed details

À rayures describes the striped pattern without naming every stripe’s colour. À capuche says the garment has a hood. À manches longues describes the sleeves; it does not say the whole item reaches the floor. Keep the complete chunk with the garment: une chemise à manches longues.

Question 1No account needed
Which phrase identifies a hood?

Choose one answer.

Answer and explanation

À capuche. À capuche describes a hooded garment; the other expressions describe patterns.

Question 2No account needed
Which description has a feminine colour agreeing with veste?

Choose one answer.

Answer and explanation

Une veste bleue. Veste is feminine singular, so the regular blue adjective is bleue.

Question 3No account needed
Which detail describes sleeve length?

Choose one answer.

Answer and explanation

À manches courtes. À manches courtes means short-sleeved, identifying the sleeves rather than pockets or colour.

For a real inquiry, add where and when you last had the item if you know. Keep the identifying description stable: une veste bleue avec une poche rouge. Replacing veste with manteau halfway through the message could make the listener search for a different kind of garment.
