In short
A shared creative room can have un chevalet, une étagère and un tableau d’affichage: an easel, a shelf and a noticeboard. Name the object with its article, then add a simple location. Les ciseaux is plural in French; un pot à crayons names one container for pencils.

The room contains eight labelled targets. Some are furniture, some hold supplies, and some are tools. Explore each one before reading the short tour. The noticeboard and canvas are blank in this vocabulary scene: their function, rather than printed text, identifies them.

A short tour of the room
Use the following description to connect the nouns to their locations. The chevalet supports a canvas; the étagère holds jars. Neither object is the table where the group can sit and draw. The boîte de rangement is a separate container on the floor.
Le chevalet est à gauche. L’étagère et le tableau d’affichage sont sur le mur. Au milieu, il y a une grande table. Les ciseaux et le pot à crayons sont sur la table. La chaise est devant la table, et la boîte de rangement est par terre.
The easel is on the left. The shelf and noticeboard are on the wall. In the middle, there is a large table. The scissors and pencil pot are on the table. The chair is in front of the table, and the storage box is on the floor.
| French | Meaning | Room example |
|---|---|---|
| Sur la table | On the table | Les ciseaux sont sur la table. |
| Dans la boîte | In the box | Je range le matériel dans la boîte. |
| Par terre | On the floor | La boîte est par terre. |
Name the holder as well as its contents
Un pot à crayons is the holder; les crayons are the pencils inside it. Une boîte de rangement names a storage container without specifying everything it contains. A clear instruction can combine them: Mets les crayons dans le pot. That tells someone both what to move and where to put it.
For a practical question in the room, use Où sont les ciseaux ? or Où est le pot à crayons ? Match est or sont to the object you name. The same simple question works with the vocabulary you need for the activity rather than with a general word such as truc.
