French consent discussions: 24 expressions for choice and limits

Learn 24 French expressions for consent discussions: authorise a specific use, ask questions, decline, reconsider and confirm the scope of an agreement.

In short

Name the use you accept or decline: J’accepte l’usage interne, mais pas la publication sur le site. Questions about audience, medium and purpose make the choice clearer. One refusal can concern one use while participation continues.

These expressions help you discuss a recording, quotation or image. They describe choices in a conversation; the arrangements in the particular form or activity supply the practical scope. Practise each chunk with a concrete complement rather than treating a broad oui as an answer to every possible use.

Separate the activity from the use of material

Je maintiens ma participation, mais je ne souhaite pas que mon nom figure dans la publication.

I will continue participating, but I do not want my name to appear in the publication.

The sentence gives two different decisions. Participation continues; named publication is declined. Ne pas souhaiter que introduces a subjunctive here: que mon nom figure. The present form happens to look like the indicative for figurer. A clear object matters more than adding a long explanation to every refusal.

Changer d’avis says that your position has changed. Revenir sur son accord identifies the agreement being reconsidered. To make the next step clear, name the material and contact the relevant organiser: Je souhaite revenir sur mon accord concernant la diffusion de cet extrait. The response can then address that specific use rather than guessing which choice has changed.
