Gap-fill

French culture gap-fill: choosing between two versions of a play

Complete French demonstrative pronouns while comparing two stagings, a filmed performance and an audio recording, with clear gender and antecedents.

In short

Match the demonstrative to the noun it replaces: le spectacle → celui, la version → celle, les acteurs → ceux, les scènes → celles. The following clause or complement identifies which one. A recording and a live show can concern the same work while remaining different versions or objects.

Mina and Paul compare two stage productions of an play, plus a film of one production and an audio recording. The hints identify the noun being replaced so the task tests agreement and reference rather than an ambiguous guess about taste.

Quelle version choisir ?

Mina compares two shows: the one by the Northern Company and the one by the River Company. Both present the same play, but their sets differ.

Paul prefers the River version. It is the one he saw in spring. Mina only knows the Northern show, the one a friend told her about.

Among the Northern show’s actors, Paul recognises those who were already in the previous production. Among the scenes, Mina particularly wants to see again those set in the garden.

A filmed performance of the River show exists. This is the recording offered by the library. It must not be confused with the audio recording: the latter shows neither gestures nor sets.

The filmed images allow comparison of the sets. Mina prefers those of the Northern version. The lines she wants to reread are those Paul remembers best. They will then choose a performance, preferably the Saturday afternoon one.

The replaced noun determines the form

Celle de la compagnie and celui de la compagnie can both be grammatical, but they replace different nouns: version and spectacle. The company’s own gender does not control the demonstrative. The same principle applies to ceux de la version: ceux replaces décors, not version.

A complement or suffix identifies the referent

Celui dont une amie lui a parlé comes from parler de ce spectacle. Celles dont Paul se souvient comes from se souvenir de ces répliques. Celui-ci is autonomous and takes its reference from l’enregistrement sonore. Do not add de before dont, since dont already expresses that relationship.

For each demonstrative, underline the noun it replaces, check gender and number, then read the identifying complement. Keep the live show, filmed version and sound recording distinct as you reconstruct the choice.
