French form and notice words: 24 exam-reading cards

Learn 24 French form and notice terms, including obligatoire, facultatif, valable and joindre, through short document examples and four paperwork objects.

In short

Read the condition, the field and the requested action. Obligatoire means required; facultatif means optional. Valable concerns validity, while gratuit concerns price. Joindre asks you to attach or enclose a document; it does not mean signing it.

Yellow the idea to rememberBlue French to learn

These cards support practical A2 reading. Their examples are short practice-document lines, not instructions from a real authority. Identify what each line actually says before adding assumptions about a whole form, booking or procedure. A word about price does not answer a question about a deadline.

Optional and free answer different questions

Facultatif says that an item is optional in the stated context. Gratuit says that it costs nothing. An event can be free while requiring registration, and a form can make one field optional while requiring another. Keep the adjective attached to the noun or field it describes.

L’entrée est gratuite, mais l’inscription est obligatoire.

Admission is free, but registration is required.

Four paperwork objects

Attach, sign and send are separate steps

Joignez le document asks for an additional document with the message or form. Signez asks for a signature. Renvoyez asks for the completed item to be sent back. A practice instruction can require all three, so noticing only one verb may leave part of the task undone.

Question 1No account needed
Which word marks a field as optional?

Choose one answer.

Answer and explanation

Facultatif. Facultatif means optional; obligatoire means required.

Question 2No account needed
What does Joignez le document ask you to do?

Choose one answer.

Answer and explanation

Attach or enclose the document. Joindre concerns adding it to the submission.

Question 3No account needed
Which wording concerns validity rather than price?

Choose one answer.

Answer and explanation

Billet valable le 12 juin. Valable states when the ticket is valid; gratuit and payant concern payment.

For a second pass, group cards by the question they answer: must I do it, when is it valid, which detail goes here, or what action comes next? That gives each word a practical role when you meet it in a longer notice.
