French formal and neutral verb pairs: 24 register flashcards

Learn 24 French formal–neutral verb pairs with precise contexts. Compare register while preserving force, construction and limits on equivalence.

In short

A register pair is a contextual alternative, not a universal substitution rule. Omettre une condition can become laisser de côté une condition, while fustiger needs critiquer vivement to retain its force. Keep the complement pattern as well as the tone.

A blue ribbon passes through a transparent prism and becomes a broad fabric patterned with coloured leaves.
A change of register can reshape the expression while retaining its basic meaning. Illustration: Atelier

Each card gives a formal or more specialised expression beside a plainer explanation. The example fixes the intended sense. Some pairs differ in force or genre as well as formality; use the notes to avoid replacing a precise act with a vague “say” or “do”.

Keep the construction and the speech act

Pallier ce manque takes a direct object; remédier à ce manque takes à. Notifier implies a formal communication act in the example, not merely mentioning news casually. Stipuler fits an agreed text such as a convention; replacing every dire with it would add a genre relation that may not exist.

Le rapport préconise un essai ; dans un message courant, on peut dire qu’il recommande cet essai.

The report advocates a trial; in an ordinary message, you can say it recommends that trial.

A deliberate formal style can remain clear. Prefer the word that identifies the action precisely. If the neutral alternative requires a longer phrase to preserve force, that can still be the better choice for the audience.
