Gratitude and closings · seven checks
1 · 1 · Match the adjective to the writer
A woman writing as herself uses reconnaissante; a man uses reconnaissant. Vous identifies the person being thanked.
Madame, je vous serais reconnaissante de me confirmer la date.Madam, I would be grateful if you could confirm the date.
2 · 2 · A group needs plural agreement
Two women writing together use reconnaissantes. A group of men, or a mixed group using standard masculine agreement, uses reconnaissants.
Nous vous serions reconnaissantes de nous répondre avant lundi. We would be grateful if you could reply before Monday.
3 · 3 · Pair gré with savoir
The conditional forms are je saurais and nous saurions. Gré is a noun in a fixed expression, so the writer’s gender has no effect.
Je vous saurais gré de transmettre ma demande au service concerné.I would be grateful if you could forward my request to the relevant department.
4 · 4 · Use de before an action
Both patterns take de + infinitive. Elide de before a vowel. For an existing favour, être reconnaissant à quelqu’un de quelque chose also works.
Je vous suis reconnaissante de votre aide.I am grateful to you for your help.
5 · 5 · Thank first, then close
In an opening participial phrase, the implied subject must match the subject of the main clause. The person doing the thanking is je.
En vous remerciant de votre attention, je vous prie d’agréer, Madame, mes salutations distinguées.Thank you for your attention. Yours faithfully.
6 · 6 · Repeat the recipient’s form of address
Put the form of address between commas in a full closing. Address two women as Mesdames; use Madame, Monsieur when addressing an unspecified recipient.
Je vous prie d’agréer, Mesdames, mes salutations distinguées.Yours faithfully, addressed to two or more women.
7 · 7 · Salutations controls distinguées
The feminine plural ending belongs to salutations, regardless of the writer or recipient. In ma considération distinguée, the noun is feminine singular.
Veuillez agréer, Monsieur, mes salutations distinguées.Yours faithfully, addressed to a man.
