French interruption sequences: order pendant que and soudain

Follow six explicitly timed French kitchen events around a phone interruption. Separate simultaneous background from the ordered spill, cleanup and return to the salad.

In short

Pendant que connects simultaneous activities; soudain marks an unexpected interruption. In this account, Élise washes leaves while Sami puts out a bowl. The phone interrupts his preparation, the bowl tips over during the call, and the written times place the later cleanup and return to the salad.

Six unnumbered scenes show a bowl, a phone, spilled water, a cloth and salad leaves.

The note below supplies the time of every main step. Use those times to reconstruct the sequence. The simultaneous background is separately bounded from 18 h to 18 h 02, so it does not become an extra step inserted between the timed events.

Sami a répondu.

À 18 h 04, Sami a terminé l’appel.

The note states six main time points and a separate simultaneous background period.

Sami a terminé l’appel.Sami ended the call.
  5. 18 h 05

Pendant que does not mean afterwards

Pendant qu’Élise lavait les feuilles, Sami a posé le bol places the bowl action within her washing activity. It does not say she finished washing before he put it down. The explicit 18 h–18 h 02 background interval makes that overlap clear.

While she was washing the leaves, he put down the bowl.

Soudain tells how the interruption arrives

Soudain presents the ringing phone as unexpected. The timestamp 18 h 02 tells you where that event sits in this sequence. The bowl then tips at 18 h 03, while the call is still in progress. Ending the call and wiping up the water are separate later steps.

Question 1No account needed
What was Élise doing when Sami put down the bowl?

Choose one answer.

Answer and explanation

Washing salad leaves. The background and pendant que clause explicitly place her washing at that moment.

Question 2No account needed
Did the bowl tip before or after the phone rang?

Choose one answer.

Answer and explanation

After. The phone rings at 18:02; the bowl tips at 18:03.

Question 3No account needed
Which event is at 18:05?

Choose one answer.

Answer and explanation

Wiping up the water. The note gives cleanup at 18:05 and the return to preparation at 18:07.

A concise retelling can omit some clock times once the order is clear: Le téléphone a sonné pendant les préparatifs. The connectors preserve the relationships established by the detailed note.
