French legal reading vocabulary: requérant, défendeur and partie

Learn 24 French person-and-procedure terms for legal reading, with genders, collocations and clear separation of procedural role from guilt.

In short

A role label identifies a person’s place in a procedure, not a finding of guilt. Le requérant brings an application before a court; le défendeur is the party against whom the claim is brought; une partie is a party to the case. Read the document’s own context before translating the role.

Legal reading depends on identifying the parties, procedural actions and the part of the document that states the decision. Photo: Hadi / Wikimedia Commons · CC0 1.0 · https://creativecommons.org/publicdomain/zero/1.0/ · resized and converted to WebP; derivative under the same licence.

The cards focus on language for locating people, actions and sections of a document. A term such as renvoi can have different procedural meanings, so its accompanying sentence matters. Do not infer the outcome from the mere presence of an applicant, responding party or witness.

Separate a party’s position from the decision

Le défendeur conteste la demande states the responding party’s action. La demande est rejetée states an outcome if it appears in the operative paragraph. The first does not establish the second. Likewise, a witness can supply an account whose weight is later assessed; the role itself does not prove every statement.

Question 1No account needed
Which section states what is decided?

Choose one answer.

Answer and explanation

le dispositif. The dispositif is the operative portion stating the decision in this reading context.

Question 2No account needed
Does défendeur by itself mean proven guilty?

Choose one answer.

Answer and explanation

No. It is a procedural role and must not be treated as a guilt finding.

La requérante demande l’annulation ; le dispositif indique ensuite si cette demande est accueillie ou rejetée.

The applicant seeks annulment; the operative part then states whether that request is granted or dismissed.
