Follow an abstract French discussion: definitions, examples and limits

Work through a B2 discussion about autonomy. Track a definition, a distinction, an example and a qualification, then test your reading of the argument.

Start with this transcript about autonomy. On paper, put four small labels beside the relevant passages: definition, distinction, example, limit. Then answer the questions. When you use the same approach with a recording, keep listening after a striking example: the next sentence may narrow its meaning.

Read it in English

Nora: We often ask young adults to be autonomous. But what do we mean by that? Samir: By autonomy, I mean the ability to make choices and accept responsibility for their consequences. That does not mean we must do everything alone. Asking for help can also be an autonomous decision.

Nora: So you distinguish autonomy from the absence of help? Samir: Yes. We also need to distinguish the right to choose from the actual means to do so. For example, a student may be free to study elsewhere but lack money for accommodation. Her right exists; she lacks the practical conditions.

Nora: Would financial support be enough to make her autonomous? Samir: It could expand her possibilities. But everything depends on the conditions attached to that support. If a course is imposed on her in exchange, her freedom of choice remains limited. Nora: So support can support autonomy, provided it preserves choice. Samir: Exactly. And this student’s example illustrates a possible difficulty, not a general rule about all young adults.
