French memory messages: ask a relative to identify the photograph

Ask a relative in French who appears in a family photograph, where it was taken and roughly when. Keep a remembered year marked as an estimate.

In short

Ask Qui sont les deux personnes ?, C’était où ? and C’était vers quelle année ?. Separate a relative’s clear identification from an estimated date. Je crois que c’était en 1988 ou 1989 gives a possible period, not a confirmed exact year.

Lina finds an unlabelled family photo and sends it to her aunt Mireille. The photo description for the exchange is simple: two adults stand in a garden, one on the left and one on the right. Mireille’s replies supply the names, place and estimated year.

Approximate yearC’était vers quelle année ?Possibly 1988 or 1989; unconfirmed

Vers asks for an approximate time or period. Je crois que marks Mireille’s belief, and je ne suis pas sûre explicitly limits her confidence about the year. That uncertainty belongs to the year only; the exchange does not express doubt about the people or the garden.

Je connais le lieu, mais l’année reste à confirmer.

I know the place, but the year still needs confirmation.

Mireille’s plan to check her own copy is a next step, not a completed check. The final summary therefore keeps the estimated period. If a written date is later found, Lina can update the caption then.
