In short
An adjective describing a plural food noun agrees with its gender and number: des salades vertes, des œufs durs. A counted noun must also be plural: deux petits gâteaux. Each line below has exactly one word to repair; the other words provide the clues.
Yellow the idea to rememberBlue French to learn

A menu often prints noun phrases without a full sentence. Des or deux can show that the dish name is plural. Then look at the noun’s gender and the adjective ending. Tap the one word that conflicts with the rest of the line. Some repairs add s, some add es, and gâteau has its own plural in x.
Tap the word that's wrong in each sentence.
Green salads
Salades is feminine plural, so the adjective is vertes.
Hard-boiled eggs
Œufs is masculine plural, so dur takes s: durs.
Two hot soups
Soupes is feminine plural, so chaude needs plural s.
Cold drinks
Boissons is feminine plural, so the adjective must be froides.
Filled sandwiches
Sandwichs is masculine plural, so garni takes plural s.
Two small cakes
Deux and petits already signal plural; gâteau must become gâteaux.
Cooked apples
Pommes is feminine plural, so cuit becomes cuites.
Savoury tarts
Tartes is feminine plural, so the adjective is salées.
Use the noun to choose the adjective
| Singular | Plural | Clue |
|---|---|---|
| Une salade verte | Des salades vertes | Feminine plural gives vertes. |
| Un œuf dur | Des œufs durs | Masculine plural gives durs. |
| Une boisson froide | Des boissons froides | Feminine plural gives froides. |
| Un petit gâteau | Deux petits gâteaux | Both adjective and noun are plural. |
Des already points to plural in these lines, so des salades verte needs a repair in the adjective. Salades is the correct noun form. In deux petits gâteau, petits already agrees with a masculine plural noun, and deux supplies the count. The remaining singular noun gâteau is the one word that needs to become gâteaux.
Feminine and plural can require two visible letters
Froid becomes froide with a feminine noun, then froides with a feminine plural noun. Cuit becomes cuite, then cuites. A single replacement can therefore change more than one letter. The task asks for one wrong word, not necessarily one missing character.
Une tarte salée ; deux tartes salées.
One savoury tart; two savoury tarts.
When writing a menu line of your own, settle the noun first: one salad or several salads, one cake or two cakes. Add the adjective, then make its ending fit that noun. That sequence keeps a correctly formed plural noun from being changed merely because the adjective beside it is wrong.
