Comparer des quantités avec précision
1 · Le double de: multiply by two
Use le double de for the ratio 2:1. Keep the reference quantity visible. Doubler expresses the corresponding change over time.
Le groupe B compte 80 membres, soit le double de l’effectif du groupe A.Group B has 80 members, twice the membership of group A.
2 · La moitié de: divide by two
La moitié de gives the resulting quantity. Diminuer de moitié describes a reduction of 50% from the starting amount.
The number registered fell from 80 to 40: it halved.
3 · Deux fois autant de: an explicit ratio
Before a noun, use de after autant: deux fois autant de membres que. The construction keeps the multiplier alongside the equal-quantity pattern.
A.Group B has twice as many members as group A.
4 · Deux fois plus: read the intended multiplier
In ordinary usage, deux fois plus de commonly means twice as many. In a data statement, write the starting and final figures or use le double to make the intended quantity explicit.
Attendance doubled, rising from 40 to 80 visits per day.
5 · Deux fois moins: replace it with a clear result
This commonly expresses half as much, but wording about a decrease can be hard to parse. Use la moitié, divisé par deux or both end figures when clarity matters.
Waiting time was halved: it fell from 20 to 10 minutes.
6 · De plus and de moins: a difference
A number followed by de plus or de moins gives an amount added or removed. Compare 20 membres de plus with 20 % de plus: the second depends on the starting group size.
Le groupe B compte 20 membres de plus que le groupe A : 60 contre 40.Group B has 20 more members than group A: 60 compared with 40.
7 · Percentage change uses the starting value
From 40 to 60, the increase is 20, or 50% of the original 40. Reversing the comparison changes the base: from 60 to 40 is a fall of about 33.3%.
Le nombre d’inscrits a augmenté de 50 %, passant de 40 à 60.Registrations rose by 50%, from 40 to 60.
8 · Points compare two rates directly
A rate rising from 20% to 30% gains 10 percentage points. Its relative increase is 50%. State which measurement you mean and keep the unit and period consistent.
The rate rose from 20% to 30%, an increase of 10 percentage points.
