In short
A presupposition is background information that a sentence presents as already given. In an ordinary reading, it often survives negation and questioning: elle a cessé de protester, elle n’a pas cessé de protester and a-t-elle cessé de protester ? all take earlier protesting as their starting point.

| Sentence | Layer | What it contributes |
|---|---|---|
| Léa a cessé de protester. | Background | Léa protested previously. |
| Léa a cessé de protester. | Assertion | That protesting stopped. |
| Il se fait tard. | Possible conversational suggestion | The speaker might want to leave. |
The test concerns what the wording treats as given, not proof that the background is factually true. Context can suspend a presupposition, especially inside a conditional. A conversational suggestion is easier to cancel directly: Il se fait tard, mais je souhaite rester encore.
